The kata is the "backbone" of Karate. They are series of movements which contain the techniques essential to the art. Katas are practiced regularly and the goal is to perfect the kata in order to absorb its techniques into muscle memory as well as to facilitate transmission from teacher to student. Each style of Karate has different kata, although they often share the same names. The following is a list of the basics (simple forms) and the traditional Shorin Ryu Karate kata practised in our dojo:
